Day One Results
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - Playing in the largest field in collegiate golf history, the Kennesaw State women's golf team finds itself in 33rd place, just 13 strokes outside of the projected cutline after 18 holes of competition at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic.
The Owls played their first round on the 5,907-yard, par-72 Oak Point Golf Course, coming in with a 331 team total. They are the top of three Atlantic Sun Conference teams in the field as USC Upstate finished day one tied for 35th and Mercer concluded play in 42nd. Miami and East Tennessee State stand tied for the team lead at 300.
"Obviously I am very disappointed in today's results," said Kennesaw State head coach Rhyll Brinsmead. "We did not handle the difficult conditions well."
Laura Lindsey led the Owls in the opening round, shooting a six-over par 78 to put herself in a tie for 54th in the enormous field of 43 total teams. After opening with a seven-over 43 on the frontside, the senior from Lenox, Ga. played bogey-free golf down the stretch to finish with a one-under 35 on the back. Her even-par average on the course's par fours was good enough for second on the day.
Patricia Arana, playing in her first collegiate event since joining the Owls in the winter offseason, carded an 80 for the Owls second-lowest score. Arana ended the day with a swing of momentum by making birdie on the par four 18th.
Ashley Aguilera and Jordan Lazenby carded the Owls other two top scores, coming in at 85 and 88 respectively to bring KSU to its daily total. Though she birdied seven and twelve, freshman Malin Becker turned in the worst round of her young collegiate career after shooting a 90.
The Owls will get a crack at the 6,009-yard, par-72 Cougar Point Golf Course on Monday with their sights set on moving up the leaderboard into the top 22 teams in order to make the championship cut. According to the tournament's format the top 22 teams will play Cougar Point for the title on Tuesday while the remaining 21 teams will play Oak Point for a flight championship.
