KENNESAW, Ga. - The Kennesaw State men's tennis team returned to the winning side of the ledger once again Friday, blanking Alabama State 7-0 at the KSU Tennis Complex to move their season record to 2-3.
"I am happy to see the team continue to play well at home," said Kennesaw State Director of Tennis Operations T.J. Greggs on the win. "Hopefully this victory will continue to improve our confidence heading forward."
The Owls were dominant in the win, dropping only one set in the entire match to raise their home record back over the .500 mark to 2-1. The loss dropped Alabama State to 3-5 on the season.
The doubles portion of the competition was shortened to two matches, both of which the Owls captured handily. Michael Langel and Simon Janik teamed up for the 8-2 win at No. 1 while Lawrence Washington and Justin Suesserman moved their doubles record to 4-1 as a team with an 8-1 win at No. 2.
Dylan Higgins quickly widened the Owls lead in singles, playing through flu-like symptoms for a 6-0, 6-0 win over Quintero Moore at No. 5. Justin Suesserman followed shortly after, disposing of Clifford Frazier 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4. Janik and Langel also won in straight sets, claiming 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-3 victories at No. 2 and No. 3 respectively.
Washington participated in the longest match of the day, going three sets with Denys Alyeksyeyeu before emerging victorious. The freshman from Salem High School won the first set 7-6 (10) before letting the Hornets top player back into the match with a 6-1 win of his own in the second. Washington closed out the tough match in a super-tiebreaker, winning 10-7 to give the Owls their second sweep of the season.
"Lawrence turned in a great win against a very strong senior opponent at No. 1," added Greggs. "He hung in there in a match that a lot of young players his age would have let slip away."
The team will take a week off before returning to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday February 28th against Florida A&M at the KSU Tennis Complex.
