Box Score

KENNESAW, Ga. - Wright State scored the winning run on a walk-off double by Ashleigh Jackson in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Kennesaw State, 1-0, in the final game of the first day of the Phyllis Rafter Memorial Tournament at Bailey Park.

Jessica Cross and Jackson went pitch-for-pitch in a classic duel with Cross allowing just three hits over six innings while Jackson allowed four KSU hits over seven frames.

However, it was two quick hits that proved costly for Cross, who suffered her first loss of the season. Allison Cox led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single to left field and Jackson helped her own cause with the game-winning double down the left field line.

The Owls (3-3) had a chance to get on the board in the second inning when Catherine Tarvin walked and Jenna Closner followed with a single to left field. After a strikeout, Rachel Chapman lined to the pitcher, who appeared to catch the ball and then drop it as she tried to pick Closner off first base.

After getting back safely, Tarvin moved to third base, but the umpires met and ruled that the freshman had left second base early and was called out, ending the Kennesaw State threat.

The Owls had another chance in the next inning when Klair Wells tripled to center field with two outs, but she was left stranded when Hollie Huffman sharply grounded out to end the inning.

Kennesaw State left a runner in scoring position in the fifth inning when Amanda Burns singled and stole second base. However, she was left stranded when Jackson struck out Jamie KeKaualua and Lyndsay McCurry.

A seventh inning doubled play erased the final Kennesaw State threat as Jordan Hackett hit into a double play after Tarvin led off with a single, was sacrificed to second and Burns walked.

The Owls will be in action on Saturday afternoon when they play Tennessee Tech at 1:00 p.m. Kennesaw State will then play in the 3:30 p.m. Third Place game or the 6:00 p.m. Championship Game after the teams are seeded after pool play ends.
