Game Notes - Kennesaw State v. Clemson
KENNESAW, Ga. - For the first time in the history of the basketball program at Kennesaw State, the KSU women's basketball squad will host an Atlantic Coast Conference team when Clemson visits the KSU Convocation Center for a 7 p.m. tip-off Tuesday night. All of the action can be seen via
ASun.TV.
The Lady Owls (2-1) are coming off a victory over Longwood at the Convocation Center Sunday afternoon, defeating the Lancers by a 72-61 score. In that contest, senior Gia Lockett scored 31 points, connecting on 10 shots from the field, the most by an Atlantic Sun Conference women's basketball player this season. Lockett topped the 30-point plateau for the second time in her career, as the senior recorded 36 against Georgia Southern last season.
Sophomore Angie Smith has been helping to spark the Lady Owls offense as well. Smith is tied for the team's scoring lead with Lockett, averaging 16.0 points per game. Smith is the only KSU women's basketball player to score in double figures all three games this season, pouring in 19 against Longwood.
The duo of senior Montinique Nixon and freshman Sametria Gideon have also started to assert themselves on the glass for the Lady Owls. Nixon pulled down a season-high 13 rebounds for KSU against Longwood, giving her consecutive games with at least 10 boards. Gideon is averaging 7.0 rebounds per game, just behind Nixon's 8.7 average. The freshman pulled down nine rebounds in Friday night's win over Jacksonville State, and followed that performance with nine more boards against Longwood Sunday.
Clemson (2-1) enters the KSU Convocation Center off a 94-92 double overtime victory over South Carolina last Thursday. Senior Lele Hardy was recently named to the Naismith Award Watch List for this season. So far, she is averaging a team-leading 16.3 points and 11.3 rebounds per game.
Following Tuesday night's game, the Lady Owls will hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to Chattanooga, Tenn., for the Doubletree Classic. KSU will face the host Lady Mocs of Chattanooga at 7 p.m. Friday night before facing either Evansville or Villanova Saturday afternoon at either 3 p.m. or 5 p.m.
