10/6/2009 11:13:13 AM

DAUFUSKIE ISLAND, S.C. – The Kennesaw State men’s golf team stands in second place after the first two rounds of the Rees Jones Intercollegiate. The Owls are sandwiched between the tournament leader, No. 24-ranked South Carolina, and No. 38 Pepperdine, who sits in third place.

“I was really proud of the way the guys played,” Head Coach Jay Moseley said following play on Monday afternoon. “We knew going in we were going to face bad weather, and the team did a great job adjusting to those conditions.”

The Owls shot 25-over par 311 in the first round and then shaved 19 shots off their score in the second round to trail the Gamecocks by 23 strokes. The Black and Gold were five shots ahead of Pepperdine and host Michigan State.

Ben Greene began the final round tied for fifth place after shooting 3-over par 147 while teammate Jeff Karlsson was tied for seventh, posting a 5-over par 149 on Monday.

Greene was 4-over par in the first round on Monday morning before posting four birdies in his second round of the day on the way to a 1-under par 71. Karlsson shot a 3-over par 75 in the first and followed with a 2-over par 74 in the second round.

J.P. Putnam was in the top 20 when the third round began, as he carded an 8-over par 152 on Monday. Putnam shot a 7-over par 79 in the first round before firing an impressive 1-over par 73 in the second round.

After an inconsistent first round where he shot 9-over par 81 with three birdies, Alex Jones regrouped in the afternoon to fire a 4-over par 76.

Chad Wilson also saw a tremendous improvement from the first round to the second as he fired a 2-over par 74 in the second round on Monday, nine shots better than his first round score.

“The weather made things difficult early on, but in the afternoon the guys were able to recover,” added Moseley. “We just have to go out on Tuesday and give it our best and take it one shot at a time.”

After darkness suspended the end of play on Monday, third round play will begin on Tuesday morning after completion of the second round that begins at 7:30 a.m.
