KENNESAW, Ga. - Junior Greteya Kelley stuffed the box score with 19 points, eight steals, seven rebounds and two assists as the Kennesaw State women's basketball team exploded for 54 points in a 73-57 win over Campbell on Saturday afternoon in an Atlantic Sun Conference game. The win gives KSU head coach Colby Tilley 250 with the program.
"We came out sluggish in the first half, but we stayed in it with our defense," said Coach Tilley. "We did a much better job in the second half of forcing turnovers with our pressure defense and getting good looks at the basket."
Campbell (9-11, 2-9) led 14-8 with just under eight minutes to go in the first half, but the Lady Camels would only score four more points down the stretch as KSU eeked out a 19-18 lead after the first 20 minutes.
In the second half, KSU (9-10, 6-5) exploded on offense. Paced by Kelley's 15 points in the half, the Lady Owls slowly started to build a lead. Up 38-32, KSU went on a 7-0 spurt over the next 36 seconds as Gia Lockett drained a three-pointer, Kelley forced a steal and converted a jumper, and Kelley sank a pair of free throws after a Britteny Henderson steal to put KSU ahead 45-32.
Campbell scored the next points, but KSu answered right back when Lockett hit her second three-pointer within 45 seconds to put the Lady Owls ahead 48-34.
CU threatened to get back into the contest late in the second half, cutting the lead down to eight at 60-52 with just under four minutes remaining. KSU would reply with three consecutive three-pointers on three consecutive possessions, as Kelley, Jennifer Baker, and DeAndrea Bullock each sank shots from long range to force the lead up to 15, 69-54, and effectively put away the contest.
Lockett scored 16 points in the contest, while Baker scored all 13 of her points in the second half. Bullock went 7-of-10 from the free throw line to finish with 12 poitns, while Jasmine Johnson had seven and Montinique Nixon chipped in six to round out the KSU scoring.
The top team in rebounding margin in the A-Sun, Campbell was out-rebounded 35-24 for the contest, with KSU holding a 14-4 edge on the offensive glass. The Lady Camels were led by Lauren Yesh's 14 points, all of which came in the second half.
Both teams shot well in the second half, with the Lady Owls connecting on 17-of-28 from the field and Campbell hitting on 13-of-24.
