MACON, Ga. - In a regionally-televised contest, the Kennesaw State women's basketball team dropped a 66-56 decision to Mercer in an Atlantic Sun Conference game. Britteny Henderson earned a double-double with 17 points and a game-high 13 rebounds in the loss.
The Lady Owls (8-10, 5-5 A-Sun) trailed 15-7 in the first half before six straight points by Jennifer Baker and back-to-back buckets by Henderson gave the Lady Owls a 17-15 lead. Montinique Nixon contributed a bucket immediately after to cap a 10-0 run to give KSU a 19-15 advantage. The Lady Bears came back to regain the lead, and led 25-23 until Angie Smith's bucket with 50 seconds to go in the half tied the score at 25-all.
KSU took a three-point lead early in the second half when Henderson completed a three-point play to put the Lady Owls ahead 30-27. The advantage ballooned to five after a Nixon bucket put the visitors ahead 36-31. At that point, Mercer (10-9, 6-4) began to heat up from the field, taking the lead at 39-38 when Natasha Doh scored at the 11-minute mark of the second half.
The game stayed tight with the two teams tied at 46-46 after Henderson connected on a pair of free-throws. The home team, buoyed by their fans dressed in white, went on a 9-0 run over two minutes of the second half to take a 55-46 lead and put the game out of reach of the Lady Owls.
Baker scored 16 points for the Lady Owls and grabbed eight rebounds, as KSU out-rebounded Mercer 49-40.
Mercer made its hay at the free-throw line, converting on 22-of-33 shots from the charity stripe, led by LaToya Jackson's 9-of-10 effort. Dominique Chism led Mercer and all scorers with 22 points, while Jackson had 15 and Doh and Natasha Ford each added 10.
With the first half of the A-Sun's double round-robin schedule now finished, the Lady Owls will begin the second half of the slate this Saturday afternoon at home against Campbell. Tip-off is slated for 4:30 p.m.
