JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior Britteny Henderson scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the Kennesaw State women's basketball team fell 70-56 to Jacksonville on Saturday afternoon at Swisher Gymnasium in the finale of a five-game road trip.
"We weren't careful enough taking care of the ball in the first half, and Jacksonville did a much better job than we did of rebounding the basketball," said KSU head coach Colby Tilley, who was denied a chance at his 700th career win. "In the second half, we did a better job, but the breaks and the calls just didn't go our way."
The Lady Owls (6-7, 3-2) trailed 10-6 in the first half but scored eight of the next 12 points, capped on a three-pointer by Jennifer Baker, to take an 18-14 lead. That would be the last lead of the game for KSU, as Jacksonville went on a 17-4 run, fueled by eight made free throws, to take a 31-22 lead at halftime. KSU was charged with 13 fouls in the first half, compared to just seven for the Dolphins.
In the second half, the Lady Owls trailed after JU (8-7, 4-2) scored the first basket, but KSU scored the next six points to cut the deficit to five, 33-28. The teams would trade baskets back-and-forth, with the Lady Owls not allowing JU to pull away. The Dolphins scored six straight points to take a 54-41 lead, but KSU came back, cutting the lead to six at 57-51 after a put-back off a mad scramble for an offensive rebound by Henderson.
That would be as close as the Lady Owls would get, as JU scored 13 of the game's last 18 points to pull away for the 70-56 win.
Henderson was one of three Lady Owls in double-figures in scoring as Baker scored 14 and Gia Lockett added 10 off the bench. Henderson was matched for team-high honors in rebounding by Montinique Nixon with nine.
JU was led with a double-double effort by Desarae Johnson. Johnson scored 19 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
KSU will be back in action this Saturday when the Lady Owls host Stetson in an Atlantic Sun Conference game. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
