SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Brittany Vining scored her first two goals of her collegiate career to help the Owls defeat Furman University 3-1 in the first match of the Academy Sports Shootout on Friday night.
The Owls (4-2-1) got an early lead when Caroline Austin curled a corner kick toward Vining who headed the ball into the far post to put the Owls up 1-0 in the 4th minute of the match.
Neither team scored again through the half until KSU went up 2-0 off another corner kick from Austin that landed in the box next to Vining who volleyed it into the top left hand corner of the goal in the 54th minute.
Beth Meadors picked up her third goal of the year, tying her total from the 2007 season. Austin once again sent a corner kick into the swarm of KSU offenders, where Meadors headed the ball into the far post in the 70th minute of play.
Jessica Kalonji came close to tallying her second goal of the season, but was denied by the crossbar.
With minutes left, the Lady Paladins Martha Hall had a shot from 30 yards out sneak past Staci Pugh to give FU their first goal of the game. It wasn't enough as the Owls went on to win 3-1.
Austin currently has five assists on the year while Meadors leads the team in goals (3) and points (8).
