MACON, Ga. - Heading into the second half down 1-0, the women's soccer team scored three goals in the final 45 minutes of Friday night's match against Jackson State to give them a 3-1 victory in the first match of the LQ Cup.

Jackson State's (1-1) Southwestern Conference preseason player-of-the-year, Naira Crimiel, had the game's only goal of the first half on a shot from the right side of the box on a pass from Elisa Mulzac in the 8th minute to put the Lady Tigers up 1-0.

"We didn't play very well in the first half," said head coach Rob King. "We spoke at half time and told our girls that they have to find a way to grind out the win."

Kristin Marietta tied the game with a through ball from Beth Meadors that split the defense. Marietta won the one-on-one against the JSU goalkeeper, Allison Lane, and netted a goal into the corner in the 57th minute.

Freshman Shelby Cosby put the Owls (2-0) ahead with her second goal of the season on an unassisted 20 yard-shot that was ripped into the right hand corner of the net.

Giving the Black and Gold a 3-1 advantage was freshman Kristin Kranick who took a cross from Caroline Austin and fired a header into the bottom left hand corner of the goal.

"Our girls really stepped it up in the second half," said coach King. "We really played hard and just wore the other team down."

Staci Pugh picked up her second win of the year while tallying two saves.

The Owls continue play in the LQ Cup on Sunday, August 31, taking on Davidson College at 12:30 p.m.
