Box Score
JACKSONVILLE, Fla.--Sophomore Kyle Heckathorn struck out 13 Jacksonville batters as Kennesaw State took game one of a three-game set, 7-1, on Thursday night in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
Heckathorn tied Justin Freeman for the highest strikeout total in a game since Kennesaw State moved to Division I. Freeman set the mark with a complete-game effort March 21 against Belmont, while Heckathorn needed just seven innings to match the record.
The Owls (28-26, 19-12) scored three in the fourth inning to take control of the game. Jacob Robbins started the inning with a single to right center, then set the Kennesaw State career record with the 54th stolen base of his career. Martin Baker then double to right center to tie the score at 1-all.
Two batters later, Jay Morrow doubled into left center, bringing Baker home with the go-ahead run. After a ground out moved Morrow to third, the senior came home to score on a failed pickoff attempt by the Dolphins.
In the fifth, KSU tacked on another run as Andrew Martin lifted a solo homer to left center.
The score remained the same until the ninth when the Owls put the game on ice. A bases loaded wild pitch brought in Jace Whitmer with the first run of the inning. With two men in scoring position still, Tyler Stubblefield singled to center, scoring Bucky Smith and Andrew Martin to bring the score to its final resting spot.
Michael Bohana earned the save for KSU, his sixth of the season. Bohana entered in the eighth inning when the margin was still three runs, qualifying him for the save.
Heckathorn (4-2) gave up just one run on five hits, with the run scoring on a first inning solo homer by Brad Simmons. The righty struck out a batter in every inning he worked except for the second.
Glenn Witkowski (2-3) took the loss for JU, giving up five runs (three earned) on five hits in seven innings of action. The Dolphins fell to 27-27 on the season, with a mark of 13-18 in A-Sun play.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow in the final day of action for the Owls in 2008. First pitch of the scheduled doubleheader is set for 1:00 p.m.
