Game Two Box Score
KENNESAW, Ga.--Starters Kyle Heckathorn and Chad Jenkins each had quality starts, lifting Kennesaw State to a doubleheader sweep of North Florida, 3-1 and 5-2, on Saturday afternoon at Stillwell Stadium, lifting KSU into second place in the Atlantic Sun Conference
Heckathorn didn't factor in the decision in game one but went 7.1 innings, allowing just one run on six hit with three walks and five strikeouts. Kenny Faulk pitched 1.1 innings, striking out three batters to earn the victory in relief with Michael Bohana getting the final out to record the save.
Jenkins worked eight innings, giving up just two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts. Adam Fine earned his first save of the season by retiring the side in the ninth.
"I thought we pitched extremely well today," said KSU head coach Mike Sansing. "Everyone that went out there for us today did a great job."
The Owls (27-24, 19-11) took the lead in game one in the third inning when Martin Baker singled to right center, bringing home Tyler Stubblefield for the first run of the game. The Ospreys tied the score in the sixth on a home run by Chad Knight.
The score remained deadlocked until the eighth inning. With Robbins on second and one out, Ric Bishop took a 2-2 offering from Phil Rorabaugh (0-2) over the wall in right for a two-run homer.
From there, Faulk (2-0) and Bohana combined to close out the contest, with Bohana earning his fifth save of the season.
"Ric had a couple of at bats during the game where he just wasn't centering the ball on his swing," said Coach Sansing. "If you give him a couple of chances though with runners on base, he'll come through like he did today."
The Owls wasted no time getting ahead in game two. KSU scored four runs in the first inning, chasing starter John Atteo after just six batters. After a double by Robbins and a wild pitch, Baker walked to put runners on the corners. Another wild pitch allowed Robbins to race home from third with the first run of the game.
Two batters later, Bishop singled through the right side to score Baker with the second run. A single by Curtis Van Wyck followed, scoring Jace Whitmer and making it 3-0 for the home team.
Atteo was lifted for Tucker Pryor, who would go the rest of the way for UNF (26-24, 15-14). Pryor allowed an inherited runner to score on Josh Whitaker's fielder's choice after Van Wyck's single, but would only allow one more run the rest of the way.
UNF scored two in the fifth, but Jenkins was never seriously threatened on the mound, throwing 84 strikes in 112 pitches.
Leading Lipscomb by one-half game for second place in the A-Sun, the Owls will try to make it a lead of a full game tomorrow when they face the Ospreys in the series finale. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
