DeLAND, Fla. - The Kennesaw State bats struggled yet again as the Owls fell to Stetson in a rain-shortened game, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at Patricia Wilson Field. Inclement weather forced the affair to be called after five and a half innings and pushed back the second game of the doubleheader until tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
The Owls (27-12, 5-4 A-Sun) managed just two hits in their 22 at-bats. Jordan Hackett posted the first hit with a single down the right field line in the third inning and Jacki Warren tallied the other with a slow roller to the pitcher in the fourth.
Stetson (30-16, 4-4) got on the board in the home half of the first when Lindsay Whitman's single scored Amy Joyce to give the Hatters an early 1-0 lead. Joyce led off with single before stealing second and advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt.
After Andrea Migliori, the Hatters' best hitter, drew a full-count walk, Whitman connected on the first pitch she saw, driving it to right field to plate Joyce.
Stetson's ace, Amanda Lindsay, was stellar in the circle through the first four innings, striking out nine Owls while allowing just one ball out of the infield. Lindsay picked up the win to improve to 16-10 on the season after finishing with 10 strikeouts in six innings of work.
The Hatters added an insurance run in the fourth when Owls starter Brittany Matthews (17-5) walked Amanda Bailey to begin the inning. After recording a pair of outs with a pop-up and a sac bunt, Matthews saw her full-count offering to Joyce ripped to right field to give Stetson the 2-0 lead.
Matthews (17-5) suffered her second straight loss by allowing the two earned runs and four hits on 80 pitches. Angela Lopez threw one inning of hitless ball in relief, allowing one walk while striking out two.
After Monday's finale, the Owls will return home to host Lipscomb and Belmont on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
