KENNESAW, Ga. - The Kennesaw State softball team ended the 2008 season on a high note, winning 1-0 over East Tennessee State in the season finale on Saturday afternoon at Bailey Park. ETSU took game one of the doubleheader, 6-0.
The Owls close the year with an overall record of 36-17 and a mark of 14-8 in the Atlantic Sun Conference. ETSU ends the regular season at 28-31 and 10-12 in the league and will now await its opponent in the conference tournament in two weeks.
The Bucs posted three runs in both the third and fourth frames to take the opener. Owls starter Brittany Matthews (21-8), pitching in her final game as an Owl, struggled, giving up the six runs on 10 hits, while only striking out three ETSU batters.
Marissa Hardy (17-12) picked up the win after going the distance, allowing just three hits while fanning 11 KSU hitters.
KSU responded in game two, scoring the lone run of the nightcap in the home half of the fifth inning. Hollie Huffman led off the frame with a single to right center and quickly advanced to second on Sarah Hesterman's sacrifice bunt.
After a Jamie KeKaulua pop up, Lyndsay McCurry notched her ninth RBI of the season when her single fell in the gap in right center, leaving plenty of time for the speedy Huffman to plate the game-winning run.
Angela Lopez (7-5) earned the victory in her final collegiate appearance, earning her second shutout of the season after throwing seven strong innings with five hits and five strikeouts. Hardy (17-13) suffered the loss despite allowing just four hits and one walk.
