CLEARWATER, Fla. - A day after the game had started, Kennesaw State needed just one run to down Fairfield, 1-0, at the Under Armour Invitational at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex.
The two teams began play on Friday afternoon but lightning and rain prevented the game from being completed until this morning.
Jessica Cross (3-1) led off the KSU half on the first with her seventh homer of the season on a deep shot to left center. That was all the offense she would need as she also picked up the win in the circle after going five complete innings, allowing just three hits while striking out three Fairfield (2-6) batters.
Jordan Hackett started today's resumption by singling to right field before Jamie KeKaualua walked to load the bases. The Owls (17-5) failed to follow through, however, as Lyndsay McCurry struck out and Cross lined out to end the second inning.
KSU looked to score again in the fifth as KeKaualua led off the frame with a double to left center. Cross then drew an intentional walk and Kelsey Kulk also drew a fee pass to once again load the bases. The Black and Gold failed to extend the lead as Laura Stalling ended the threat by striking out.
Brittany Matthews made her third appearance of the tournament as the senior lefty worked the final two innings, striking out all six batters she faced to earn her first save of the season. The Brooks, Ga., product has been nearly unhittable so far throughout the four-day event, allowing just three hits in 14 innings of work while not giving up an earned run all weekend.
The Owls will return to action this afternoon as they take on the Indiana Hoosiers, before closing out the tournament with a 11:00 a.m. game against Syracuse on Sunday.
