Box Score
NASHVILLE, Tenn.--Kennesaw State's Ric Bishop and Jay Morrow each had three RBIs and Wes Tignor pitched six solid innings of relief to lead the Owls to a, 10-3, victory over Lipscomb in the first game of a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series on Friday evening at Ken Dugan Field.
The Black and Gold scored the first seven runs of the game, starting with a pair in the third inning. With two on and two out, Morrow singled into left, scoring Tyler Stubblefield from second for an RBI. Jacob Robbins also scored on the play, racing home after a throwing error to put KSU ahead, 2-0.
The Owls (10-14, 6-4 A-Sun) put the game away in the fourth with a five-spot. A bases loaded walk to Robbins brought Andrew Martin home with the first run of the frame. Two batters later, Bishop tripled into left center, clearing the bases and putting KSU on top by six.
Morrow followed Bishop's triple with an RBI single to plate Bishop from third and complete the scoring in the inning.
Lipscomb (12-11, 8-5) scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth to close the gap. The score stayed the same until the sixth when Robbins raced home from second on Morrow's fielder's choice to restore the lead to seven.
Both teams scored twice in the ninth inning. For KSU, Martin's fielder's choice with the bases loaded brought home Morrow to make it 9-1. One batter later, Curtis Van Wyck singled to left to score Jace Whitmer with the Owls' final run of the game.
Lipscomb scored a pair in the ninth on a single by Branden Cadavid and a ground out by Jorge Gutierrez.
KSU starter Kyle Heckathorn was sharp, allowing only one hit in three innings. Heckathorn was forced to leave the game early after a one-hour rain delay. Tignor rose to the occasion for the Owls, pitching six solid innings and giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits.
Rex Brothers took the loss for Lipscomb. Brothers was charged with five earned runs in 3.1 innings of action.
The two teams will tangle again Saturday in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
