KENNESAW, Ga. - The Owls spotted Southern Miss two runs in the top of the first inning, but came back with four unanswered runs to down the Eagles, 4-2, in final game of pool play at the K-Club Classic at Bailey Park on Saturday.
Kennesaw State (7-0) broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning when Amanda Malcom led off the inning with a triple to left field. Jenna Closner followed with an infield single scoring Malcom and giving the Owls the lead.
The Owls would add an insurance run in the inning as Jordan Hackett continued her hot hitting with a single and fellow freshman Lyndsay McCurry, followed with a run scoring single.
Anglea Lopez (2-0) earned the win with two solid innings of relief work. The right-hander scattered three hits and struck out a pair of batters including getting out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth inning. Southern Miss got the leadoff runner on base in the seventh inning, but Lopez retired the final three batters to earn the victory.
Kennesaw State fell behind in the top of the first when Southern Miss (5-3) rallied for a pair of runs after getting the first three batters on base. Brandi Alonzo singled to lead off the game, Holly Milner walked and Kristin Pilgram followed with a single to load the bases of KSU starter Jessica Cross.
The Owls then turned a double play, one of three on the afternoon, which scored a run for Eagles but limited any early damage. Megan Hill singled up the middle to make the score, 2-0, before Cross pitched out of the inning.
Kennesaw State answered quickly as Jacki Warren smacked her first collegiate home run to left center field, scoring Lyndsay McCurry who led off the inning with a walk. Warren's home run was the seventh home run this season for the Owls.
Kennesaw State finished pool play undefeated and will face Southern Miss for the second time on Saturday when the teams met in the championship game at approximately 4:00 p.m. Eastern Kentucky and Appalachian State will meet in the consolation game.
