KENNESAW, Ga. - The Owls used a nine-run, third inning to open things up as they defeated Eastern Kentucky, 13-5, in the second game of the K-Club Classic on Friday afternoon at Bailey Park.
Kennesaw State (6-0) was tied with EKU going into the bottom of the third inning before striking for nine runs on six hits and taking advantage of three Eastern Kentucky errors in the Owls largest single-inning run outburst of the year.
The Owls sent 14 players to the plate in the inning that began with a hit by freshman Jordan Hackett (1-for-3), the first of eight consecutive batters to reach base for the Owls.
Lyndsay McCurry (3-for-5) followed with an infield hit, one of three in the game for the freshman who alos stole three bases to increase her season total to nine. Jamie KeKaualua (2-for-3) then reached on an error that scored Hackett for a 2-1 KSU lead.
Jessica Cross (0-for-2) then walked and Jacki Warren (1-for-4) knocked in the second run of the inning on a fielder's choice before Kelsey Kulk (2-for-4) delivered a two-run single to make the score 5-1 in favor of the Black and Gold.
Amanda Malcom (1-for-3) singled for another run and chased EKU starter Stacye Toups. Jenna Closner (0-for-2) walked to load the bases and after a ground out forced Kulk at home, Hackett came up for the second time and drove in Malcom with a sacrifice fly to left field.
McCurry then singled for the second time in the inning scoring another run and KeKaualua followed with the sixth hit of the inning, driving in the final run of the frame and making the score, 10-1.
Kennesaw State appeared to be headed towards a five-inning victory, but Eastern Kentucky struck for four runs in the top of the fifth inning off Kennesaw State starter Brittany Matthews. With two outs, EKU strung together a double and three consecutive singles to make the score 10-5.
The Owls answered with a solo run in the bottom of the fifth and added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for the eight-run rule victory. Matthews, who struck out eight in five innings and allowed 10 hits, moved to 4-0 on the season with the win.
Kennesaw State will play Southern Miss in the final game of pool play at noon. The consolation game will begin at 2:00 p.m. while the championship will be played immediately following. The day begins with Appalachian state playing Eastern Kentucky at 10:00 a.m.
