KENNESAW, Ga. - Sarah Hesterman blasted a pair of home runs and Jessica Cross earned her first collegiate win as the Owls defeated Appalachian State, 8-1, at the K-Club Classic on Friday afternoon at Bailey Park.
The Owls (5-0) stayed perfect on the young season as the quickly jumped out to a 5-0 lead on the Mountaineers. Hesterman led off the third inning with her first home run of the season, a blast to right-center field. Cross added to the rally with a two-run shot to left field for her second home run of the year, giving the Black and Gold a 3-0 lead.
The runs were more than enough support for Cross (1-0), who notched the win with four and one-third innings of six-hit work. The freshman hurler struck out six of the 21 batters she faced while allowing a run before giving way to Angela Lopez in the fifth inning.
Lopez, a transfer from Troy University, was dominating in her two and two-thirds innings of work as she struck out seven of the 10 batters she faced, allowing just two hits.
Hesterman gave the Owls a pair of insurance runs in the fourth inning when she hit her second home run of the game, a blast to straight-away center field scoring Amanda Malcom who led off the inning with a bunt single.
Hesterman and Malcom each had two hits to lead a seven-hit Kennesaw State attack. The Owls would add three runs in the top of the seventh inning as they took advantage of two walks, a two-run double by Kelsey Kulk and a run-scoring error.
The Owls will face Eastern Kentucky in the late game on Friday before playing Southern Mississippi on Saturday. The consolation and championship games of K-Club Classic will take place on Saturday afternoon with the consolation beginning at 2:00 p.m. and the championship game following.
