BAJA, Mexico - The Kennesaw State women's golf team, led by Abby Fitzgerald's final round 76, maintained their position today at the Baja Invitational, earning second place to turn in their best finish of the season.
The Owls fired a final round 322 to finish six strokes behind the champion Iowa Hawkeyes and three strokes ahead of third place Southern Illinois with a three-round total of 947.
Fitzgerald led the Owls in the final round, moving up seven spots on the strength of the the second-lowest round of the day to finish in a tie for fifth with a 234. The top five finish is the first of Fitzgerald's career and marks the fourth time the sophomore has paced the Owls in five events this season.
Freshman Jessica Tarbet came back to the pack a little after a closing 83, but still managed to finish only one stroke behind Fitzgerald in a tie for seventh. Laura Lindsey turned in a third top-ten finish for the Owls, finishing tied for tenth with a 237.
Chelsea Bonk and Lindsay Hagerman fell victim to the difficult conditions, but managed to turn in scores necessary to help KSU remain in second place. Bonk wrapped up the event with an 83 and a 243 total to finish in 23rd while Hagerman fell back to a tie for 27th at 245.
The Owls led the field in a number of categories including birdies (27), pars (37), and par five scoring (5.16) while Tarbet led all individual players with a 4.89 par five scoring average.
Tyrette Metzendorf of Iowa took the individual title, turning in a 224 total to finish five strokes ahead of a group of players in second place. Full results can be found at www.golfstat.com.
The Owls will take two weeks off to practice and rest before returning to action on February 25th and 26th in Buies Creek, N.C. at the Fighting Camel Spring Classic hosted by Atlantic Sun rival Campbell.
