Box Score

TROY, Ala.--Determined not to let a late lead slip away, the Kennesaw State women's basketball team earned its first victory of the season with a 64-58 win over Troy on Wednesday night at Trojan Arena.

Last season, the Lady Owls (1-4) led the Trojans for most of the contest until the final second of the game when Troy scored to swipe the victory. Wednesday's contest seemed to be heading towards a similar conclusion, as the Lady Owls saw a 60-51 lead evaporate down to just two points with a 7-0 run by the Trojans (2-4).

This time, fate would be on the side of the Lady Owls. Trailing by two points with a chance to complete a three-point play, a free throw for Kylie Morrisey fell off the iron, with the rebound going to KSU's Angie Smith. The Lady Owls wound the clock down to 17 seconds before Smith took a shot that bounced off the rim. The scramble for the rebound ended with KSU in possession and Greteya Kelley at the charity stripe to shoot a pair. Both free throws were good, giving KSU a four-point edge.

After Troy's final shot missed, the Lady Owls got another defensive rebound and Smith converted on a pair of foul shots to give KSU the 64-58 win.

A freshman from Lauderhill, Fla., Smith finished the night with a team-high 15 points to go along with five rebounds. She also had five rebounds, three steals and two assists while not committing a turnover in 26 minutes of action off the bench.

Senior Jennifer Baker had 11 points for KSU while Kelley finished the night 6-of-7 from the free throw line en route to eight points. As a team, the Lady Owls shot 17-of-20 from the free throw line, good for 85 percent.

Morrisey and Donette McNair led the Trojans with a pair of 20-point efforts. Troy shot 21-of-54 from the field, but did not make a three-pointer in the contest.

For the fifth straight game, the Lady Owls forced an opponent to commit at least 20 turnovers as the Trojans turned the ball over 25 times. The Lady Owls were 22-of-57 from the field, including going 3-of-11 from behind the three-point line.

With the first win of the season under their belts, the Lady Owls will now turn their attention to the classroom with final exams beginning for KSU. Kennesaw State will be back in action on the basketball court on December 13th against USC Upstate in the Atlantic Sun Conference opener for the Lady Owls. Game time at the KSU Convocation Center is set for 7:00 p.m.
