FARMWOOD, Va.--Senior Jennifer Baker scored 13 points while junior DeAndrea Bullock fell a point short of a double-double as the Kennesaw State women's basketball team earned a 61-41 win over Longwood on Sunday afternoon.
Baker went 5-of-9 from the field, including KSU's only two three-pointers, to lead the Lady Owls. The Lady Owls led 24-18 after the first half of play, then out-scored Longwood (4-6) 37-23 in the second half en route to the victory.
Bullock earned a spot start for the Lady Owls (4-5) with senior Britteny Henderson unable to play after being injured at the end of regulation against East Tennessee State on Thursday night. Bullock responded with a career-high 12 rebounds and nine points, with six coming from the free-throw line.
The Lady Owls dominated the glass, out-rebounding Longwood 51-30. Part of that rebounding edge was due to the defense on Longwood's shooters, as the Lancers were 7-of-28 from the field in the first half and just 10-of-28 in the second half for a game percentage of 30.4.
The largest deficit KSU faced all day was just three points as Longwood led 7-4, but the Lady Owls responded with one of Baker's two three-pointers on the day to tie the score. The three sparked a 7-0 spurt which put KSU ahead for good, as Davia Harris and Bullock each scored for the Lady Owls.
In the second half, the lead was down to four for KSU at 24-20, but the Lady Owls scored the next six points to push the lead into double-figures. The lead would slowly swell to 15 as, with the lead at six, the Lady Owls used a 9-0 run to go ahead 47-32 with just over 7:30 remaining. Defense keyed the run for the Lady Owls as Longwood went without a field goal for over eight minutes of the second half.
Becky Fernandes scored 10 poionts to lead Longwood. The Lancers only turned the ball over 18 times, the first time this season KSU has failed to enduce 20 turnovers from an opponent.
The Lady Owls will break for the Christmas holiday before returning to action on December 29 at Clemson. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
