SAVANNAH, Ga.--Sophomore Kelvin McConnell had a game-high 16 points, but it wasn't enough as a late Savannah State surge pushed the Tigers past Kennesaw State, 53-49, on Tuesday night at Tiger Arena.
The Owls trailed by three at the half, 27-24, but rode the hot hand of McConnell to a six-point lead. McConnell had 12 points in the second half, all in the first eight minutes of the stanza, to push the Owls to the lead.
Savannah State (6-4) was able to make enough plays down the stretch to get the victory. The defense of the Tigers held the Owls to seven points over the last eight minutes, and 12 points from Chris Linton on 5-of-6 shooting was enough to propel the home team to victory. Linton also completed a double-double by grabbing 10 rebounds.
The Owls had solid contributions from Brandon Champers and Zadrian Gibson who each scored eight points off the bench. The Owls forced 20 turnovers but turned the ball over 20 times themselves.
The Owls will be back in action on December 23 when East Tennessee State visits the KSU Convocation Center. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
