KSU Set To Battle Belmont

KENNESAW, Ga. - After receiving a bye in the first round of the Atlantic Sun Conference Wwomen's Soccer Championship Tournament, the Owls will battle Belmont in the semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the KSU Soccer Complex.

"It is a great feeling to be in the semifinals," said senior defender Jessica Kalonji. "There is no pressure and it puts us in a good position."

To move onto the semi's, No. 3 seed Belmont defeated No. 6 Stetson on Wednesday night, 2-0, as sophomore forward Erica Carter and All-A-Sun Second Team selection, Annie Mussachio, scored goals.

The Bruins return seven starters off a team that finished fourth in the conference last season. This year marks the second consecutive season that they came into the conference tournament as the No. 3 seed.

Currently 12-6-1 on the year, Belmont is led by Mussachio who has eight goals and 18 points. All-Freshman selection, Jamie Loftis, is second on the team in goals with four. Their goalkeeper, Sari Lin, was also named to the All-Freshman team.

Earlier this year, the Owls played Belmont to a scoreless tie. Staci Pugh picked up five saves while Rachel Baer had six shots and four shots on goal. Belmont's Lin had 10 saves while Loftis and Elizabeth Bublis each took three shots.

The Owls enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed, finishing the regular season with an 11-4-4 mark. Kennesaw State had six players receive All-Conference honors including, Beth Meadors, Kalonji and Baer, who earned First Team honors. Bridget Gaughan was named to the Second Team while Brittany Vining and Katie Scott picked up All-Freshman recognition.

The Black and Gold are led by Baer who has 10 goals and 24 points. Freshman Kristin Kranick is second on the team with five goals while Meadors, Vining and Shelby Cosby each have four goals.

KSU looks to repeat as the A-Sun Tournament Champions, after defeating Mercer, 2-1, in 2007 to take home the title. The Owls have a 2-1 record in A-Sun post season action, defeating Mercer and ETSU last year after falling to Jacksonville in 2006.
