Box Score
CLINTON, S.C.--Redshirt sophomore Sabrita Gulley had a double-double with 11 kills and a team-best 12 digs, but the Kennesaw State volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (25-12, 25-16, 19-25, 25-23) decision to Presbyterian College on Tuesday night.
The first set was competitive for the first 22 points as KSU (6-20) went on a 5-0 run to tie the Blue Hose, 11-11. From there, Presbyterian (8-17) went on a 14-1 run to take the set, 25-12.
In the second set, the Owls jumped out to an early 9-5 lead after a kill by junior Asjia Stokes. The Blue Hose would go on a 7-0 run to take control of the set, building their lead up to nine at 21-12. The Owls could get no closer than six points after that, falling 25-16.
The third set would be a different story, as this time it would be the Owls that went on the big run. With the set tied at 13-all, the Owls scored six of the next seven points to open up a 19-14 lead. When the Blue Hose came back to cut the lead to one, the Black and Gold rose to the challenge. Ahead 19-18, the Owls got a kill from Stokes and a solo block by junior Chelsey Denesha to take a 21-18 advantage. The Blue Hose took the next point, but the Owls would take the final four. A kill by Stokes started the spurt, then back-to-back kills for Denesha gave the Owls set point. One chance was all KSU would need as a service ace for Stokes brought the Owls back into the match with a 25-19 win in the third set.
The fourth set was the most competitive, featuring nine ties and six lead changes. The Owls found themselves down 13-9, but rattled off three straight points thanks in part to a pair of Presbyterian errors to pull within one. Then with the Owls down 15-13, KSU scored three stright on kills by Stokes, Denesha, and junior Ginny Frederick to take a 16-15 lead. Presbyterian scored the next two points, but Denesha and Stokes staked the Owls to a one point lead, 18-17. With points bouncing back-and-forth between the two teams, the final tie came when Shanice Smith's kill evened the score at 20-all. The Blue Hose won the next two points to take a 22-20 lead, and while the Owls pulled within one twice more, they couldn't tie the score again. After fighting off one match point with a kill by Asjia Stokes, the Owls fell after Amanda Kettle's match-high 14th kill gave the Blue Hose a 25-23 win in the set and a 3-1 win in the match.
Stokes matched Kettle kill-for-kill with 14 for the match. KSU's freshman setter Rachael Albright also recorded a double-double with 17 assists and 10 digs. The Owls recorded 44 kills to 43 for PC, but the Owls committed 17 more attack errors than the home squad.
Rachel Lewis had a double-double for the Blue Hose with 36 assists and 10 digs. As a team, PC had 11 blocks compared to just five for the Owls.
KSU will be back in action this weekend with their final homestand of the season. The Owls will take on Jacksonville this Friday night at 7:00 p.m., then will battle North Florida on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
