ATLANTA--Senior Britteny Henderson led Kennesaw State with 13 points, but Georgia Tech used a 12-0 run in the early stages of the second half to pull away for a 77-49 victory over the Lady Owls at Alexander Memorial Coliseum on Wednesday night.
"I think this stretch of games is going to go a long way towards helping us in the Atlantic Sun Conference this season," said KSU head coach Colby Tilley about the first three games of the year which saw the Lady Owls play at Richmond on Friday, at No. 4 North Carolina on Monday, and at Georgia Tech tonight. "Especially in the last two games, there were stretches where we took everything two extremely good teams could give us and we stood toe-to-toe with them."
The Lady Owls hung around in the first half, not letting the Yellow Jackets pull away. The home team led 29-20 with 1:37 left in the opening 20 minutes, but the Lady Owls scored on a three-pointer by Gia Lockett and a desperation three pointer by Angie Smith at the buzzer of the first half to cut the deficit to just five, 31-26, going into the break.
KSU scored the first four points of the second half off of baskets by Henderson and Greteya Kelley, but the Yellow Jackets then began to pull away, using a 12-0 run to take a 43-30 lead. The Lady Owls would get no closer than 10 the rest of the way, with that coming at 50-40 on a bucket by Henderson. Tech would close the game by scoring 27 of the final 36 points en route to the win.
The Lady Owls struggled to control the ball against Tech's swarming defense, committing 39 turnovers. Tech was sloppy as well, turning the ball over 29 times. But ultimately, the Yellow Jackets used the turnovers forced to get to the foul line and put the Lady Owls in major foul trouble for most of the second half. Tech finished 27-of-36 from the foul line, compared to just 8-of-14 for the visitors.
Lockett was the only other Lady Owls player to score in double figures, tallying 11 points.
A quartet of Yellow Jackets reached the 10-point plateau, led by Alex Montgomery's 17.
The Lady Owls will now return home to open up the home portion of their schedule. KSU will face the College of Charleston this Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
