CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--Senior Jennifer Baker scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Kennesaw State women's basketball team dropped to 0-2 on the season with a 102-68 loss at the hands of No. 4 North Carolina on Tuesday night at the Dean Smith Center.
The Lady Owls were playing the highest ranked team that they had faced since moving to Division I. While KSU can claim to have had an early lead on the Tar Heels, the solid shooting of the home team spurred UNC (3-0) on to victory.
After scoring the first point of the game on a Baker free throw, the Lady Owls fell behind for good after UNC scored the next five points of the contest. The lead would slowly grow to 23 after the first 20 minutes as the Tar Heels shot 21-of-39 from the field en route to a 56-33 lead.
After allowing the Tar Heels to score 20 points in the first half off of turnovers, it was the Lady Owls who did a better job of taking advantage of UNC miscues in the second half. The Lady Owls scored 17 points off of UNC's mistakes, compared to just 14 for the home squad. While KSU had 29 turnovers for the game, the Lady Owls forced one of the top teams in the nation into 27 turnovers, with 17 coming on steals.
But in the end, the Tar Heels would maintain a shooting percentage of over 50 percent for the game, draining 38-of-72 from the field and 22-of-31 from the line to earn the victory.
Junior Greteya Kelley tied for game-high honors with four steals. The Lawrenceville, Ga., native also scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds.
In all, five Lady Owls scored in double figures, led by senior Britteny Henderson's 14. Junior Gia Lockett and freshman Angie Smith came off the bench to score a dozen each for the Black and Gold.
The Tar Heels got a double-double from Jessica Breland, who scored 19 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Italee Lucas scored 16 points off the bench, while Cetera DeGraffenreid dished out 10 assists.
The Lady Owls will continue play against Atlantic Coast Conference foes on Wednesday when KSU visits Georgia Tech. Game time at Alexander Memorial Coliseum in Atlanta is set for 7:00 p.m.
