Box Score

RICHMOND, Va.--On Opening Night for the Kennesaw State women's basketball team, the Lady Owls struggled from the field, hitting on just 35 percent of their shots in a 79-62 loss to Richmond on Friday night at the Robins Center.

First-half struggles, which at times plagued the Lady Owls in the exhibition season, continued to hurt KSU in the opening game of the season. A 9-0 run over the first four minutes of the contest enabled the Spiders to take a lead they would never relinquish. After trailing by 12, 37-25, after the first 20 minutes, the Lady Owls saw the deficit balloon to 27 with just over 11 minutes left in regulation.

The Lady Owls would come back to make things interesting with a 17-2 charge during the middle stages of the second half, making the score 63-51 with seven and a half minutes to go in the game. But a quick 5-0 spurt for the Spiders expanded the lead back to 17 and put the game out of reach.

Senior Jennifer Baker had a double-double for the Owls in the loss, scoring a game-high 17 points and pulling down a game-best 11 rebounds. Redshirt junior Greteya Kelley chipped in 11 points in the loss.

Five players scored in double figures for Richmond, led by 16 points for Brittani Sheilds. Johanna McKnight had a double-double off the bench for the Spiders with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Spiders shot 52.6 percent for the contest, with the home team hitting on over 50 percent of their shots in both halves.

Outside shooting hurt the Lady Owls as KSU went 3-of-21 on the night from beyond the arc. KSU went 21-of-46 from inside the three-point line.

The road will not get any easier for the Lady Owls as KSU heads to Chapel Hill, N.C., to face No. 6 North Carolina on Monday night. Tip time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
