KENNESAW, Ga.--The Kennesaw State women's basketball team finished off a perfect exhibition season by defeating a pesky Columbus State squad, 101-79, on Tuesday night at the KSU Convocation Center. Reigning Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year Britteny Henderson led all players with 24 points and 11 rebounds.
For the second straight game, the Lady Owls struggled to hold a lead after the first half as KSU led 40-35 after the first 20 minutes. Columbus State pulled within a point at 52-51 with more than 14 minutes remaining in the contest, but the Lady Owls closed the contest by scoring 26 of the final 37 points.
Making her first appearance of the season at point guard, senior Lennisha Johnson dished out eight assists to lead the offensive attack. Gia Lockett scored 19 points, including the final three of the game with two seconds remaining to put the Lady Owls over the 100-point plateau. Reigning A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year Greteya Kelley matched Lockett with 19 points, while freshman guard Angie Smith netted 12 in the winning effort.
The Lady Owls shot a blistering 60 percent from the field in the second half, hitting on 24-of-40 shots. KSU finished the contest making good on 51.3 percent of their field goal opportunities.
The game featured two ties and two lead changes, with CSU (1-2) holding a five-point lead less than three minutes into the game for their largest advantage of the night. The Lady Cougars hit on 43.7 percent of their shots from the field, but went 12-of-23 from the charity stripe.
KSU will now prepare for its first regular season contest of the year as the Lady Owls will face Richmond this Friday night at 7:00 p.m. in Richmond, Va.
