FORT MEYERS, Fla. - Sporting pink laces in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Kennesaw State women's golf team looked strong on the opening day of the 31st Annual Pat Bradley Invitational, finishing the day in seventh place.

Coming in with a pledge to donate five dollars to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for every birdie the team makes, the Owls found the red numbers an impressive 20 times in the first two rounds. They are just two strokes out of the top five and seven out of the top three after opening 303-306 at the 6,118-yard, par-72 Pelican Preserve Golf and Country Club.

"We really showed up today and continued to show improvement on the course," said Kennesaw State Head Coach Rhyll Brinsmead. "I think the added motivation of helping a good cause with birdies really helped us go out there and putt with an elevated level of confidence and aggressiveness."

Senior Laura Lindsey leads the Owls after 36 holes, shooting the team's lowest score in both of the first two rounds. She opened with a 73, her second-lowest round since joining the Owls, before carding an afternoon 75 to finish the day in tenth place. Lindsey, who is just four strokes out of second place, is third with 26 pars.

Malin Becker continued her solid play to join her more experienced teammate inside of the top 25. Becker, who recorded her first collegiate top 25 in the Owls last event, is tied for 19th heading into the final round after going 75-77 on Monday. The Owls freshman finished the day third in par three scoring (3.00) and fourth in birdies with five.

Jordan Lazenby and Ashley Aguilera rounded out the scoring for Kennesaw State on day one. Lazenby is tied for 29th at 154 (75-79) while Aguilera is a stroke behind in a tie for 34th after going 80-75. The pair of Owl juniors finished the day tied for third in birdies after recording six each.

Lindsay Hagerman couldn't find her stroke Monday, carding back-to-back 88's to finish the day in 72nd.

"If our women go out there on Tuesday and give it their best effort, we should be rewarded with our best finish of the fall," added Brinsmead. "That would give us a big boost in confidence heading into off-season workouts."

Florida International, the tournament's host, holds both the team and individual lead. The Golden Panthers (291-291 = 582) hold a two-shot lead over second-place Florida Southern while FIU's Paula Hurtado (67-70 = 137) has a commanding seven-stroke advantage in the individual competition.

Teams will play the final 18 holes on Tuesday with prizes being awarded to the top three finishers in both the team and individual competitions. A recap of the action will available on the Kennesaw State Athletics homepage following the conclusion of play.
