ATLANTA--Setter Ginny Frederick recorded the 1,000th assist of her career, but it went for not as Kennesaw State dropped a 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25- 18) decision to Georgia State on Tuesday evening at the GSU Sports Arena.
The Owls (5-18) fell behind early in the first set, 2-0, before a kill by junior Ginny Frederick gave the serve to the Owls. An attack error brought the score into a tie, and the teams traded points. A block gave KSU its first lead, 4-3, but the Owls couldn't extend the lead any higher than a lone point. GSU (2-21) retook the lead on a kill, making the score 7-6. The Panthers built the lead up to four after a KSU attack error, and the Owls asked for timeout down 10-6.
The timeout didn't stop the GSU run, as a solo block won the Panthers the next point. Asjia Stokes killed an over ball on the next point to stop the run, and a second consecutive kill cut the lead to three, 11-8. The teams traded points, with GSU extending the edge to five after a kill. Chelsey Denesha ended GSU's run with the first of her match-high 13 kills, and the teams traded points again. Frederick's second kill cut the lead down to three, but an attack error gave GSU the serve up 16-12. An ace built the lead back to five, and after KSU couldn't get two more sets back over the net, the lead went to seven. An attack error put GSU up 20-12 and KSU asked for timeout again.
The Owls dropped the next point off the timeout, but a kill by Sabrita Gulley ended GSU's run at 6-0. A blocking error resulted in a kill for Callie Churchwell, and a second kill for Gulley pulled KSU within six. After a GSU attack error, the Panthers asked for time with the run at 4-0 for the Black and Gold.
GSU took the point after the timeout, with a kill by Paris Leonce giving the serve back to KSU. The teams traded points, but the Owls needed a run, down set point at 24-18. KSU fought off the first point after an extended rally, but an attack error gave the first set to GSU, 25-19.
The Owls led early in the second set, 3-1, before GSU retook the lead. The teams battled back-and-forth, with KSU taking a 7-6 lead after a kill by Gulley. GSU then went on a 5-0 run to take an 11-7 lead before a kill by Stokes ended the run. The Panthers would take the next two points, sending the Owls into a timeout down 13-8.
A service error gave KSU the point off the timeout, but GSU took the next point off a kill. Denesha dropped home an attack to cut the lead back to four, but the teams traded points again. KSU finally cut the lead to three, 16-13, after a kill by Leonce. Rachael Albright dumped home an attack t trim the lead to two, 16-14, but GSU took the next two points to rebuild the lead. KSU scored to straight points though on consecutive kills to battle back. After an ace for Gulley, the Panthers lead was down to one and the home team asked for time.
GSU blocked an attack after the timeout to regain a two-point cushion. A kill dropped in the court for the home team, but the Owls cut the gap to two again after a kill. The teams traded points, with GSU breaking the streak by building the lead to four, 23-19, after an attack dropped just outside the sideline. The deficit sent the Owls into their second timeout of the set.
The Owls won the next point after the timeout on a service error. Frederick's dump attempt over the net dropped in to cut the lead to two, 23-21. A successful attack gave GSU set point, and a service ace gave the home team the set, 25-21.
In the third set, the Owls took the first two points after a Stokes kill and a pair of blocks. GSU earned a point but Denesha's eighth kill of the match put the Owls up three, but GSU took four of the next five points to tie things up. The Owls took the next two points to regain a 7-5 lead, but the Panthers took the next three to gain the lead, 8-7. A kill for Frederick tied the set back up, 8-all, and a block for the Owls put KSU back up, 9-8. After a kill on an over ball by Chanel Davis, the Black and Gold led again by two. GSU came back to tie, but a service error gave the Owls a one-point lead again, 12-11. GSU took the lead, 13-12, after a KSU ball handling error, and after an attack landed off the court, the Owls called time down 14-12.
The Owls won the first point off the timeout thanks to a GSU attack error. The Owls had an attack error to give the serve back, but a Denesha kill brought KSU within a point again. The Panthers, though, would take the next two points to gain a 17-14 lead.
GSU committed a service error to give KSU the serve back, but again, the teams would start trading points. A block for KSU brought the Owls within a point, 18-17, but GSU regained a two-point lead with a kill. An attack error put GSU up by three, and a service ace pushed the spurt to 3-0 and sent the Owls into a timeout down 21-17.
GSU won the next three points off the timeout, giving the Panthers match point. The Owls would fight off one match point, but a kill ended the match with the Panthers winning the set 25-18 and the match 3-0.
The Owls will be back in action this Friday in Fort Myers, Fla., in Atlantic Sun Conference action against Florida Gulf Coast. Match time is set for 7:30 p.m.
