MACON, Ga. - The Owls start at this season's Brickyard Collegiate Championship was very similar to their performance in the event last year, after they finished the day tied for 10th at the 7,104-yard, par 70 Brickyard at Riverside Golf Club.
The Owls, who finished fifth after opening in 12th last season, turned in a 299 Saturday to tie four other teams. They are still in contention; just five strokes out of the top five and eight behind third place Virginia Tech. Georgia Tech holds the team lead after opening with a two-over 282.
J.P. Putnam continued his strong play, leading the Owls with a two over par 72. Putnam shaved a stroke with a birdie on 18 to finish tied for eighth. He is two shots out of the top five and five behind leader Cameron Tringale (GT). The Owls junior led the field in par five scoring (4.00) and was second in birdies (4).
Christopher Johnson had a good outing in his first event in nearly a year, shooting a 73 to put himself in a tie for 14th. Johnson was steady on Saturday, finishing second in pars with thirteen while only bogeying four holes.
The remainder of the Owls squad didn't fare as well. Michael Tulacz's streak of par-or-better rounds was stopped at nine after he turned in an uncharacteristic 76. Tulacz proved last year that he was capable of going low on this course, shooting 68-67 on the final two days to tie for fifth.
Jeff Karlsson's 78 counted for KSU's fourth and final score. The Owls freshman looked good on the front nine, making the turn at 36 before a run of bogeys down the stretch brought him back to the pack. Matthew Nagy couldn't find his game in his first trip to the Brickyard, carding an 80 to come in tied for 74th.
Kennesaw State will tee off at 9:50 a.m. on Saturday and will be paired with Florida State and Charlotte. Live scoring, provided by Golfstat, is available by clicking on the live stats link on the right-hand side of the Kennesaw State Athletics homepage at www.ksuowls.com.
