DeLAND, Fla. - Greteya Kelley scored a career-high 20 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double as she helped lead Kennesaw State to a 66-59 win over Stetson on Monday afternoon at the Edmunds Center.
The redshirt sophomore had her best performance in a Lady Owls (8-9, 3-2 Atlantic Sun) uniform. The Appalachian State transfer went 7-of-12 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line to post the most points by a KSU player since Gia Lockett's 22-point night against Presbyterian on November 17. Kelley grabbed nine rebounds, seven on the defensive end, to go along with a season-best six assists and three steals.
As was the case in its last outing, Kennesaw State came out of the halftime break ice cold from the field. After a Jennifer Baker jumper pushed the lead to 34-30, the Lady Owls missed their next 13 shots from the floor.
Meanwhile, Stetson (3-15, 1-4) took advantage of KSU's misfortune and the Hatters grabbed their first lead since the opening basket of the game after a Tierra Brown lay-up and Sharnesha Smith three-pointer put the home team ahead, 40-36.
It wasn't until nearly 12 minutes remained in the contest that Britteny Henderson's lay-up broke the KSU drought and pulled the team within two. The host Hatters quickly responded and put together a quick 8-4 run, capped by two Smith free throws, to take a six-point lead with 9:45 to go.
Trailing 54-49, the Black and Gold seemed to regain their shooting touch, as DeAndrea Bullock started the come-back by hitting a three and pulling KSU to within two with 5:29 to play. Kelley took over down the stretch, scoring six of the Lady Owls' final 13 points, including a three-pointer from deep outside the arc two clutch free throws with seven seconds remaining to seal the victory and snap KSU's recent two-game skid.
Henderson came off the bench for the third time this season, scoring 13 points and grabbing six rebounds. The Atlanta native has scored in double figures in her last eight games and in 11 of KSU's 17 contests this season. Baker also finished in double digits for the Lady Owls, scoring 11 points in 26 minutes, while Montinique Nixon narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Kennesaw State controlled the boards, out-rebounding the Hatters, 43-30. Stetson made 24-of-56 shots (.429) from the field, while the Lady Owls converted just 21-of-59 attempts (.356).
After a pair a games away from home, the Lady Owls will return to the KSU Convocation Center on Saturday afternoon when they play host to the Lipscomb Lady Bisons. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. and all the action can be seen live on A-Sun TV.
