KENNESAW, Ga. - Eight losses is enough for Kennesaw State as the Owls snapped their losing streak with a 21-point win over rival North Florida at the KSU Convocation Center on Saturday evening.
Kennesaw State (3-13, 1-2 A-Sun) won its first conference game of the season behind the senior leadership of Ronell Wooten (5-for-13) and Shuan Stegall. The pair combined for 33 points, Wooten with a game-high 17 points and Stegall (5-for-9) with 16, in the Owls, 80-59, win before 1,052 fans.
The Black and Gold had four players score in double-figures as they shot 45 percent from the field while holding North Florida (1-15, 0-4) to just 38 percent from the floor, the Owls second best defensive effort of the year.
The Owls took a 12-point lead into halftime, 39-27, and within seven minutes of the second half improved their lead to 26 points. KSU trailed for the first eight minutes of the game before J.D. Pollock (2-for-3) hit a three-pointer with 11:16 left in the first half to give the Owls a lead they would keep throughout the night.
Redshirt freshman John Allison (3-for-8) made his first college start and was impressive. The Owls 7-foor-1 inch center scored eight points, pulled down six rebounds and blocked three shots in just 20 minutes. Tanner Jacobs (6-for-10) scored 14 points and Ryan Daugherty (3-for-5), who played briefly for UNF, scored 11 points against his former team.
The Owls committed a season-low 13 turnovers as freshman point guard Kelvin McConnell continues to mature at the position. The rookie, who scored five points, had just one turnover and three assists in 28 minutes.
Stan Januska (5-for-10) scored 16 points to lead North Florida while the Ospreys leading scorer, Tom Hammonds (6-for-13), scored 13 points.
The victory was the third straight for the Owls over North Florida at the KSU Convocation Center. It was also the fourth win in the last five meetings between the teams since they both joined the A-Sun.
Kennesaw State will be back in action on Thursday evening as they travel to play Stetson in DeLand, Fla. Tip-off is scheduled for at 8:15 p.m. eastern standard time. The game can be heard on SuperTalk 1230/1340 AM.
