CHICAGO, Ill. - Lindsey Plotner had 10 kills for the Owls, but DePaul was too much for Kennesaw State as the host Blue Demons defeated Kennesaw State, 3-0 (30-21, 30-18, 30-22), in the DePaul Volleyball Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
Kennesaw State (2-8) was once again strong up front and finished with seven blocks. Jasmine Ruiz and Rachel Odom led the Owls with 1.5 blocks each, Ruiz had the Owls lone solo block of the match. In addition to topping the Owls in kills, Plotner also topped KSU with a .292 attack percentage.
DePaul (3-5) finished with a .268 attack percentage while the Owls finished the match with an .081 percentage as the Blue Demons won their third straight match.
The Owls, who have lost four straight matches, led just twice in the match, once in the first set and again in the third set. The opening game saw the Owls score first on a service error by DePaul`s Sarah Cullen. However, a 6-0 run by the Blue Demons followed and the Owls weren't able to cut into the DePaul lead.
Sabrita Gulley had four consecutive service aces to highlight a 5-0 run for Kennesaw State, cutting the DePaul lead to 24-18. But the Owls would score just three more points as they dropped the opening game.
In the second game, the Owls and the Blue Demons split the first two points before a 5-0 run by DePaul set the tone of the game. Scoring 12 of the next 13 points, DePaul led 13-3 and cruised to the 30-18 win for a two game advantage. Only three times in the second game did Kennesaw State score consecutive points even though the Owls did take 11 of the final 21 points of the game.
The third game looked to be all Kennesaw State as the Owls scored the first three points of the game and led 9-7 before the Blue Demons rattled off six straight points to take a 13-9 lead. The Owls stayed within striking distance and twice were able to cut the lead to three points on kills by Asjia Stokes. and Plotner. DePaul ended the match by outscoring KSU 10-2 to take the final game by a 30-22 score.
Tara Dillon had 21 assists for Kennesaw State while Eman Burns led the Owls with 10 digs. Charla Drabant and Kate Letcher had double-digit kills for the Blue Demons while Christy Landschoot had 30 assists and Maureen Zigulich had 10 digs to lead DePaul.
The Owls will conclude the tournament on Saturday evening when they play Samford. Kennesaw State will be back home on Tuesday evening when they play host to Presbyterian at 7:00 p.m. at the KSU Convocation Center.
