Owls Fall in First Match at DePaul Invitational

CHICAGO, Ill. - The Kennesaw State women's volleyball came up short in the first match of the DePaul Volleyball Invitational falling to the University of South Alabama, 3-0 (30-18, 30-20, 30-26), on Friday afternoon.

The Owls (2-7) got off to a strong start in the first game and were tied at 5-5 before a fierce South Alabama rally put the Jaguars (3-1) ahead 12-5. South Alabama opened up the first game hitting at a .375 attack percentage, while the Owls could only muster a percentage of .233.

Game two saw Kennesaw State's momentum peak in the early going as the Owls raced to a 10-4 lead and looked to be in complete control. However, the furry faded as a kill by Hristina Markova sparked a 17-6 run to take a 21-16 lead.

The Owls managed to cut the lead to three points, 21-18, on a service error and an attack error, but South Alabama won the next five points to take a two game lead heading into the break.

In the third game, Kennesaw State again jumped out to a 10-4 lead, but South Alabama chipped into the Owls lead and tied the third game at 17-17. Asjia Stokes came up with a kill to bring the Owls within a point, but that was as close as Kennesaw State would get as the Jaguars pulled away for the sweep.

Sabrita Gulley led the Owls with 10 kills, Ginny Frederick had 24 assists while Jenny Black added seven kills and six digs. South Alabama was led by Maria Kashavelova who had 48 assists.

The Owls will continue play in the DePaul Invitational tomorrow as they take on the host Blue Demons at 12:00 p.m., before taking on Samford at
