Kennesaw State libero Selina O'Leary had 10 digs to lead all players, but Chattanooga limited the Owls to 25 kills in a 3-0 (30-13, 30-18, 30-22) loss to the Lady Mocs on Tuesday night in Tennessee.
O'Leary's 10 digs were better than Chattanooga's Lara Newberry seven. It was Newberry who entered the match with an NCAA-best 7.37 digs per game average, but it was the KSU libero that did the digging damage. The sophomore had a double-figure dig total for the eighth time this season.
As a team, the Owls also out-blocked the Lady Mocs by a 6.0-4.0 margin. Rachel Odom had four total blocks (including a block solo) to lead the KSU front-line defense.
The primary difference in the match came on the attack, as Chattanooga hit .307 to KSU's .011 mark. The Lady Mocs had 41 kills, compared to 25 for the Owls.
Jenny Black had nine kills to lead the Owls offense. Sabrita Gulley continued her strong play with seven kills and nine digs - also topping Newberry's dig total. Ginny Frederick had a team-best 20 assists.
Chattanooga never trailed in the match, but the Owls gave a strong fight in the third game, tying the score on four occasions. In that final game, the Owls were down 9-4, but went on a 6-1 run to even the score at 10-all. KSU took advantage of a Chattanooga service error, a Gulley kill, two kills by Black, and two aces by O'Leary to account for their six points.
The Owls trailed again later in the third, but down 13-11, a kill by Asjia Stokes and an ace for Black brought the Owls to a 13-all tie. KSU would eventually see the Lady Mocs extend the lead and eventually take the game 30-22.
