MOBILE, Ala. - The Kennesaw State men's golf team, led by Michael Tulacz's third place finish, maintained their position after the final round of the USA Jaguar Intercollegiate to finish in third place in their first tournament of the season.
The Owls recorded a two-over par 290 in the final round to finish with a school-record three round total of 850 (286-284-290=-14), 24 strokes behind the champions Middle Tennessee State (270-272-284=826). The third place finish is the Owls highest since winning the Stetson/CDSC Invitational last November.
"It was a great way to start the season," said Kennesaw State head coach Blake Smart. "Tulacz's effort was obviously outstanding, but I am proud of the way our entire team performed."
Tulacz who carded only three bogeys to go along with 13 birdies in the tournament, recorded a three-under par final round 69 to finish just three strokes behind champion Daniel Burns (65-70-68=203) of the host Jaguars. The three-round total is both his collegiate low as well as the lowest three-round total posted by an Owl golfer at the Division I level.
First year Owl, Bryan Alred, recorded the Owls second lowest three round total, carding a 75 in the third round to finish in 16th with a 214 (71-68-75).
Kennesaw State's other two final round scores were posted by Chris Johnson (72) and Oliver West (74) who finished tied for 20th and 36th respectively.
"Finishing in the top three should definitely give us some much needed momentum heading into the Brickyard where we will face some of the top teams in the country," said Smart.
The Owls will next face a host of national powers including last year's NCAA runner-up UGA Bulldogs on October 7-9 at the Brickyard Collegiate hosted by Atlantic Sun Conference rival Mercer in Macon.
