DRAPER, Va. - The Kennesaw State women's golf program started out their first season under new head coach Rhyll Brinsmead on a high note, finishing in the top half of the 15 team field at Appalachian State's Draper Intercollegiate Invitational.

The Owls seventh place finish (610,+34) is the highest team finish the young program has posted in three tries at the Draper Intercollegiate. Kennesaw State's previous best finish was ninth in 2005 in the team's first-ever tournament.

"Our goal was to finish in the top half of the field this week and we accomplished that," said Brinsmead on Kennesaw State's finish. "I am very proud of how all of our girls performed this week."

Sophomore Abby Fitzgerald, who led Kennesaw State with a first round 73, was the Owls top finisher after shooting a final round 76 to record a five-over par 149 and a ninth place finish. Fitzgerald, who posted her highest collegiate finish, is the first Owls golfer to finish in the top ten since teammate Chelsea Bonk placed sixth at the Sea Trail Women's Intercollegiate nearly a year ago.

Bonk and Owls newcomer Laura Lindsey paced Kennesaw State in the final round, each firing a three-over par 75 on their way to ties for 23rd and 27th respectively. Lindsay Hagerman joined Lindsey and four other golfers in a tie for 27th after shooting a final round 78 to finish at 10-over par (154).

The Owls were able to move up two spots on the leader board after improving their first round score (306) by two shots on a day when team-scoring average increased.

"I am very pleased we were able to come out and improve upon yesterday's score on a day with tougher conditions," said Brinsmead on her team's day two performance. "It is always nice to see your team's name move up the leader board in the final round."

Winthrop University won the tournament after shooting the low round on both days to finish with a 13-over par team score of 589 (292-297). Charleston Southern's Olivia Higgins led all individual scorers after carding a four-under par 140 (71-69).

The team will return home for the next two weeks to practice and prepare for their second tournament of the season, the Great Smokies Invitational. The tournament, hosted by Western Carolina University, will be held on September 29 and 30 at the Waynesville Country Club in Waynesville, N.C.
