JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - On Saturday morning at the Jacksonville Industrial Park, Junior Erin Sutton won the 2007 Jacksonville State University Cross Country Season Opener for the second straight year while also leading Kennesaw State to victory.
The women's team looked strong in their first race of the season as they easily handled the seven team field. The Owls (1-2-6-7-8) finished with 24 points, 17 points ahead of second place Jacksonville State and 62 points ahead of third place West Georgia.
Kennesaw State's small roster of seven runners had six women finish in the top ten. Freshman Mackenzie Howe (11:00) had a break out run as she led the field for most of the race, but ultimately finished second behind teammate Sutton (10:53).
Britany Reilly (11:38) finished in sixth place, with Caitlin German (11:43) finishing seventh and Kristen Gibson (11:45) concluding the scoring for the Owls with an eighth place finish.
"Our women had a great opening day," said head coach Stan Sims. "Erin
(Sutton) picked up right where she left off from last season and Mackenzie Howe had a great first race. This team is right where it needs to be."
Kennesaw Sate (6-0) will be back in action on Saturday, September 8 when they will participate in the Mercer Invitational.
