ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The Owls overcame a two games to one deficit and fought back from a three-point margin in the deciding game, as KSU defeated host UNC Asheville, 3-2 (30-26, 25-30, 22-30, 30-23, 15-12), at the Third Annual UNC Asheville Volleyball Classic at the Justice Center.
The Owls (2-4) took the first game from UNC Asheville (0-4) before dropping the next two and rallied in the fourth game to force the fifth-game tiebreaker. The win was the second of the season for Kennesaw State, who surpassed their win total from last season.
Asjia Stokes led the Owls with 15 kills while Tara Dillon paced the Owls with 31 assists. Lindsey Plotner had 13 kills while Jenny Black and Sabrita Gulley added 11 each for the Black and Gold.
In the tiebreaker, the Owls twice fell behind by three points. KSU trailed early in the fifth game, trailing 4-1 before head coach Valerie Jones called a timeout to help reorganize her troops. The move worked as kills by Gulley and Plotner helped Kennesaw State scored two quick points to get back in the game.
The Owls trailed, 7-4, before going on a 5-2 run to tie the game at nine apiece. A pair of kills by Stokes and one by Gulley keyed the Owls comeback. With the scored tied, Gulley and Liz Schreck gave Kennesaw State an 11-9 lead and the Owls held on for their second road win of the year.
The Owls will play Western Carolina at 1:00 p.m. to conclude the tournament. Next week Kennesaw State visits Chicago, Ill. for the DePaul Tournament where they play South Alabama, Samford and the host Blue Demons.
