JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Erin Sutton finished second in the women's 10,000 Meter Run to lead Kennesaw State in the first day of competition at the 2007 Atlantic Sun Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday evening at Liberty Bell Park.
"I was hoping for some more points on the first day," said head coach Don McGarey. "We are headed into a stronger day for us so we should add more points and challenge the field."
Sutton, the Owls premier long-distance, runner went stride-for-stride with North Florida's Amanda Davey for nearly the entire race. Sutton, who has the third-fastest time in the event this season is coming off a leg injury, gave one of the grittiest and determined runs of the year for Kennesaw State.
The Owls sophomore led for a large portion of the race and nearly captured the crown until Davey pulled out the victory with a late surge during the final two laps.
"I was pleased with how I ran tonight," said Sutton after the race. "I stayed with her (Davey) throughout the race but I just needed to work on my kick at the end."
Assistant Coach Stan Sims, who coaches the long-distance runners, had nothing but praise for Erin saying that she is "not our number one runner for no reason."
Kennesaw State's Stacie Anthony is in second-place and is within striking distance of Jacksonville's Tiffany Bromfield in the Heptathlon. Anthony has 2,498 points and trails only Bromfield who has 2,680 points. Anthony finished tied for first in the High Jump, was second in the 400 Meter Dash, third in the 100 Meter Hurdles and fourth in the Shot Put.
Also, Lakeshia Stinson qualified for the finals of the 100 Meter Hurdles. Stinson finished fourth in her heat to qualify for Saturday afternoons finals.
In the Long Jump finals, Sandi Brown (5.24m) finished in eighth place and Shantela Davis (4.98m) finished in ninth place.
