KENNESAW, Ga. - In the biggest conference series to date, the Owls needed a good performance from starting pitcher Brittany Matthews on Friday afternoon. What they got was an absolute gem of a game from the junior, as Matthews threw the third no-hitter of her career as Kennesaw State defeated the Stetson Hatters, 2-0, in the first game of a doubleheader at Bailey Park.
Matthews (13-4) was simply overpowering as she completely dominated each of the Stetson hitters. The left-hander struck out 10 batters and allowed only a first inning walk to Sherrel Fountain and then hit Jessica Lokeinsky with a pitch to lead off the third inning.
The Brooks, Ga. native retired the last 15 batters of the game in order and struck out the Hatters number three and four hitters, Nicole Forbes and Andrea Migliori, a combined five times.
Erica Demers (12-5) pitched well for Stetson, allowing just five hits while striking out six batters. However, it was a pair of solo home runs that proved to be the difference in the game.
April Keasler (1-for-3) broke open a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning when she went with an outside pitch and poked her fifth home run of the season over the right field fence for a 1-0 Kennesaw State lead.
The Owls added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning when freshman Klair Wells (1-for-3) hit the first home run of her collegiate career, a line drive to center field, giving the Owls a 2-0 advantage.
With a two-run advantage, Matthews got stronger as she fell behind on only three of the 23 Stetson batters she faced. She struck out the side in the fifth inning and struck out two of the three batters she faced in the seventh inning for her sixth double-digit strikeout effort of the year.
