MACON, Ga. - Jena Ellis' two-run, fourth inning double was too much for Kennesaw State to overcome as the Mercer Bears prevented the Owls from clinching the Atlantic Sun Conference regular season title out-right with a 3-1 victory in the nightcap of a doubleheader at Sikes Field on Wednesday night.
Kennesaw State (40-18, 14-4 A-Sun) clinched at least a share of the regular crown with a win in game one and can still win the title with a loss by Stetson in their last four games. The Hatters still have conference series against UNF and Jacksonville next weekend.
The Owls looked well on their way to winning the regular season title out-right and securing a sweep of Mercer (12-41, 5-9) after April Keasler smacked her seventh home run, a solo shot, in the top of the second inning.
KSU had a chance to extend its lead in the top of the third when, with two outs and Amanda Malcom on second base, Keri McKee legged out an infield single, but Malcom, who was running on the play, rounded third and was tagged out at home after pulling up thinking the play had ended.
But the Bears would not be denied on senior night as they tied the game in the third inning after Ellis led off the frame with a walk. After a sacrifice bunt pushed her to second, Kelly Bretscher brought home Ellis with a single through the left side to knot the game at 1-1.
Then, in the fourth inning, Ellis delivered the dagger to the Owls when her double to left center fell into the gap, scoring Stacey and Crystal Condra to make the score 3-1.
Norie Glazebrook (5-5) suffered the loss for the Owls after allowing three runs and three hits in 3.2 innings pitched. Stephanie Rossman improved to 6-15 with the win.
Kennesaw State will close out its 2007 schedule when the Owls play host to the KSU Invitational, beginning on Friday at 10:00 a.m. Joining the Owls in the five-team field will be Cal State Bakersfield, Northern Colorado, North Dakota State and South Dakota State.
