KENNESAW, Ga. - Martin Baker had five hits and scored four runs as the Kennesaw State offense pounded out 14 hits in a, 13-5, win over Alabama State on Tuesday afternoon at Stillwell Stadium.
The Owls (24-18) trailed 2-0 after the Hornets first at-bat as starter Kody Paul got off to a rough start. The Kennesaw State freshman recovered enough to pitch six solid innings as he earned his first collegiate victory.
Kennesaw State went on to tie the game in the bottom of the first inning and built an 8-2 advantage with the help of a five-run fifth inning. After a three-run home run by the Hornets (10-24) in the top of the sixth inning made the score, 8-5, the Owls scored a run in the bottom of the seventh and added four in the bottom of the eighth to secure the win.
In addition to Baker, three other Kennesaw State players had multi-hit games with Zack Upton, Matt Hopkins and Tyler Stubblefield each having two-hits apiece.
Ben Sosebee and Matt Eckardt combined to pitch three scoreless innings of relief as the Owls won their second straight game. Sosebee allowed two hits and struck out three batters in two innings of work, while Eckardt pitched a scoreless ninth inning, getting a pair of strikeouts.
Stubblefield and Clint Roques each drove in three runs for Kennesaw State while Baker had a pair of steals, giving him 19 on the year. Zeb Hilburn and Selmon Pearson each had two hits for Alabama State. James Jordan hit a three-run home run off Paul in the sixth inning.
The Owls will be back in action on Friday evening when they open a three-game series against the Mercer Bears in Macon, Ga. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. The series will conclude with a Saturday doubleheader.
