KENNESAW, Ga. - After yesterday's 45-minute rain delay in the second inning and 18 hours after having the game suspended, Kennesaw State finally defeated North Florida, 5-1, at Stillwell Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
With one-out and the game tied, 1-1, in the bottom of the seventh inning, the contest was halted after Kennesaw State head coach Mike Sansing and North Florida head coach Dusty Rhodes met with the umpiring crew and suspended the contest this afternoon at noon.
After resuming play, Kennesaw State (20-15, 4-7 A-Sun) wasted no time in taking the lead as they pushed a run across in the seventh inning. Zack Upton, who was at-bat when the game was stopped, drew a walk when UNF reliever Antonio Franzese assumed a 3-1 count and delivered a ball on the next pitch.
After a successful sacrifice bunt by Andrew Martin, Clint Roques broke the tie with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Kennesaw State would put the game out of reach with a three-run eighth inning, highlighted by RBI singles from Jace Whitmer and Roques and a sacrifice fly by Jerome Wooley.
The Owls got a strong effort from left-hander Cacey Rogers, who raised his record to 4-1 on the year. The senior held the Ospreys to one run on seven hits with five strikeouts. Meanwhile, North Florida starter Derek Bell (2-2) was equally as impressive, allowing the Owls a run on five hits through six-plus innings of work.
Kyle Muschara shut down North Florida (15-23, 6-8 A-Sun) with two innings of scoreless relief as he earned his first save of the season.
For the second straight game, North Florida got on the board first scoring in the top of the fourth inning when T. J. Thompson singled home James Belyea, who was hit by a Rogers pitch.
Kennesaw State tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Matt Hopkins led off the inning with a walk. After an out, Martin Baker lined a double to right field, scoring Hopkins with the tying run.
The Owls will look for a sweep of the three-game series in the regularly scheduled Sunday afternoon game.
