VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Owls won their second straight match, defeating Queens (NY) College on Saturday morning at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Round-Up at Owl Creek.
The Owls (3-15) clinched the match after taking five of six singles matches as they dominated the four-time East Coast Conference champions from New York. Queens College dropped to 11-2 on the season.
"This was a great all around effort," said Kennesaw State head coach Brandon Padgett. "I am very proud of this team."
Kennesaw State won all five of their matches in straight sets and now have a 5-1 record playing at the Hampton Roads tournament.
At No. 2 singles, Giselle Nakakura blanked Alyssa Morra in straight sets in the most lopsided victory of the afternoon for the Owls. Karen Ammann was a straight-set victor at No. 3 singles, downing Afiya Lahens with a 6-0, 6-3 victory.
One of the most competitive matches of the morning came at No. 1 singles as Mercedes Cobos beat Dominika Bajuk, 7-5 and 6-2. Jeni Thomas and Lindsey Whalen were both involved in tight matches with Thomas coming out ahead, 6-4 and 60-4 at No. 4 singles while Whalen was edged by Andrea Condur, 6-3 and 6-4.
Because the outcome of the match was decided after singles play the doubles flight was not contested.
