KENNESAW, Ga. - Andrew Martin and Tyler Stubblefield hit back-to-back home runs to propel Kennesaw State past Charleston Southern, 9-3, on Friday night at Stillwell Stadium.
With the game tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth, Martin, 2-for-2 with two singles so far on the night, strolled to the plate looking to continue his perfect game. The Owls (9-6) first baseman didn't waste any time as he took the first offering from Cody Higgins deep over the left field wall.
After a pitching change for Charleston Southern (9-10), Stubblefield looked to extend the margin and did so after smacking a 2-2 pitch over the right field fence to give KSU a 5-3 lead. Jacob Robbins followed with a single, pushing his consecutive hit streak to 29 straight games, and later scored on Martin Baker's sacrifice fly, making the score 6-3.
KSU would add two insurance runs in the seventh and another in the eighth to secure its fourth straight victory.
CSU got on the board first in the top of the first inning as Owls' hurler Chad Jenkins struggled to find his location early. After a Robbins error put the first batter on, Justin Fyle singled through the right side to put two on. Steven Herzog then ripped a 1-1 fastball over Jay Morrow and the left field wall to give the Bucs an early 3-0 lead.
The Owls responded in their half of the second scoring two runs off a Stubblefield sacrifice bunt and a Robbins triple.
Jenkins picked up his first collegiate win after going six strong innings, allowing two earned runs and five hits, while throwing 93 pitches. Brandon Roberts, who gave up four earned runs and six hits, suffered the loss for CSU as he record fell to 1-2.
The Owls and Buccaneers will continue their series tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. at Stillwell Stadium.
