JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Kennesaw State finished their brief Florida road trip with its second straight loss as North Florida downed the Owls, 6-1, at the UNF Tennis Complex on Thursday afternoon.
North Florida (11-3, 5-2 A-Sun) snapped a two-match losing streak while the Owls (0-9, 0-5 A-Sun), who have been playing well of late, remained winless as they battle through their worst start in the program's history.
The Owls looked strong in doubles and had a chance to win at both No. 1 and No. 3 flights. Giselle Nakakura and Mercedes Cobos dropped an 8-6 match to Catalina Castillo and Natalia Sanchez at No. 1, while Karen Ammann and Carolina Page nearly pulled off a win before falling, 9-7, to Florencia Torres and Ina Durcakova.
In singles play, Ammann took the first set from Torres but then North Florida's No. 3 player rallied to win in a third-set tiebreaker. Cobos played another competitive match at No. 1 singles before falling in straight sets.
Kennesaw State's lone win in singles came at No. 4 singles, where Jeni Thomas continued her excellent play, defeating Robin Rogers, 6-3, 7-5. Thomas has split her last four matches.
Lindsay Whalen saw her two-match win streak stopped as she fell in straight sets to Danielle Dasmarias.
The Owls host Evansville on Saturday and Savannah State on Sunday at the BridgeMill Tennis Center. Both matches begin at noon.
