CANTON, Ga. - Saturday saw many first's for the Owls women's tennis team, however a first victory off the season narrowly escaped Kennesaw State as Western Carolina nipped the Owls, 4-3, at the BridgeMill Tennis Complex on Saturday morning.
Kennesaw State (0-8) took its first double point of the season, when they won at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. However, the Owls could only take two of six singles matches as they lost their eighth straight match.
"This was a match that could have gone either way," said head coach T. J. Greggs. "But unfortunately we couldn't win the big matches when it counted."
Karen Ammann won at No. 3 singles in three sets and Lindsey Whalen was a straight-set winner at No. 6 singles to keep the match tight. The Owls had a pair of strong chances to win their first match of the season, but Giselle Nakakura (No. 2 singles) and Carolina Page (No., 5 singles) both lost in three sets.
"Everyone fought hard and Karen pulled out a tough three set win, but we came up just short today," added Greggs. "I was really impressed with Lindsey Whalen, as she won her first match this year. We also won the doubles fairly easily, so it's just a point here or there and the match could have been ours."
Kennesaw State is back in action on March 7 when they visit Jacksonville. The Owls will play North Florida on March 8 to conclude their two-match road trip.
